The Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force under the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, has once again demonstrated its effectiveness in curbing illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border. In a recent operation near Chandrapur in Agartala, Tripura, the Assam Rifles successfully thwarted a major smuggling attempt and seized a significant amount of banned foreign cigarettes worth an estimated Rs. 5.1 crore.
The operation, which was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs, involved a well-coordinated effort by the Assam Rifles troops in the area. A total of 170 cartons of illegal foreign-manufactured cigarettes were intercepted and confiscated during the operation. The seized contraband was promptly handed over to officials from the Customs Department for further investigation and legal action.
The successful seizure of the illegal cigarettes underscores the ongoing commitment of the Assam Rifles to safeguarding India’s economic and security interests. The Indo-Bangladesh border has long been a hotspot for smuggling activities, and the Assam Rifles has been maintaining heightened vigilance in the region to combat such illegal cross-border operations.
A senior official from the Assam Rifles emphasized the significance of the seizure, stating, “This operation not only showcases our operational efficiency but also sends a strong message to smuggling syndicates that their illegal activities will not go unchecked.”
The Customs Department is currently conducting a thorough investigation to identify the individuals involved in the smuggling attempt and trace the network behind the operation. The cooperation between the Assam Rifles and the Customs Department in cracking down on illegal activities highlights the importance of interagency collaboration in combating cross-border crimes.
