Belonia, a town in South Tripura, is set to receive a Doppler radar in order to bolster the state’s ability to provide early weather warnings, officials announced on September 27th.
At present, there is only one Doppler radar in operation in the entire district, which is managed by the India Meteorological Department. The addition of a new radar, which has been approved by the Central government, is expected to enhance weather forecasting and disaster preparedness not just in Belonia but across the entire South Tripura district, according to District Magistrate Muhammad Sajad.
A review meeting was held on September 26th, during which officials visited the proposed site for the radar installation. Sajad stated that the radar will be instrumental in improving early warning systems, weather predictions, and disaster management within the district.
The administration is aiming to have the radar fully operational by February, well in advance of the next monsoon season. Belonia has experienced severe flooding in recent years due to heavy rainfall and its proximity to the Bay of Bengal. These floods have resulted in significant damage to both property and crops, underscoring the importance of the new radar as a tool for mitigating future losses.
The addition of the Doppler radar in Belonia is expected to significantly enhance the state’s capacity to respond to weather-related disasters and ultimately protect the lives and livelihoods of those living in the region.
