Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has expressed his concerns regarding the growing trend among IAS officers who are avoiding returning to the state after their central deputation ends. Saha recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this issue, although he did not mention any specific officers by name.
During a public event on Sunday, Saha disclosed his concerns while speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the upcoming Civil Service Officers’ Institute at Kunjaban. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to improving working conditions for bureaucrats and expressed hope that the new institute would dissuade officers from seeking deputations outside the state.
The chief minister highlighted the importance of retaining administrative talent within Tripura and expressed worry about officers who actively avoid coming back to the state. Saha mentioned instances where officials engage in indirect lobbying to extend their stay outside the region, which he believes creates challenges for the state.
Despite these challenges, Saha praised the bureaucrats for their contributions, noting the increase in the state’s budget from Rs 27,000 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 32,000 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year. He attributed this growth to the diligent efforts of the officials in implementing policies for comprehensive development.
Reflecting on his own journey, Saha shared, “I had no target to be a doctor, but I became a doctor. I also went on to this position. It is the people’s blessings.”
The issue of bureaucratic retention in northeastern states has been a longstanding challenge, with many officers preferring assignments in metro regions due to better infrastructure and career prospects. Tripura’s leadership is actively working to reverse this trend by investing in institutional support and directly engaging with the Centre on the matter. (PTI)
