Tripura government has recently implemented new regulations regarding auto-rickshaws in Agartala city, the state capital. Transport Minister Sushanta Choudhury announced that all autos operating within the city limits must be painted pink for easy identification. This decision was made in an effort to ease traffic congestion and make the city more traffic-friendly.
Furthermore, autos from outside Agartala will not be allowed to ply within the city unless in cases of emergency. Minister Choudhury mentioned that after a meeting with various departments, including transport and traffic, it was observed that autos from other subdivisions frequently enter the city without valid permits, leading to disputes with local auto drivers and law enforcement.
To address this issue, the government has mandated the color-coding of autos within Agartala and will take action against those found violating the new regulations. Auto owners have been given one month to comply and repaint their vehicles. Additionally, the Joint Transport Commissioner will issue notices to schools to prevent private vehicles without commercial licenses from illegally transporting students or passengers.
The Minister emphasized that according to the Motor Vehicles Act, three-wheelers can only operate within a 15-kilometre radius. Therefore, autos from outside the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area will be prohibited from entering the city if they exceed this distance. Surveillance will be tightened at 13 entry points to prevent unauthorized entry of autos.
In order to regulate and prevent the unpermitted entry of autos into the AMC area, the SP Traffic will prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This move is expected to streamline traffic flow and improve overall transportation within Agartala. The government is hopeful that these new measures will enhance the efficiency and safety of auto-rickshaw operations in the city.
