Tripura Police have arrested Madhavi Biswas, a digital content creator, on charges of spreading obscenity through social media platforms. Biswas, known for her outspoken videos criticizing political figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, was taken into custody after a complaint was filed by Paramita Ghosal of Ramnagar.
The arrest took place on Sunday night when a police team raided Biswas’ residence in Jogendranagar, West Tripura district. She is accused of spreading obscene content on social media, leading to a case being registered against her under various provisions of the IT Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Biswas is set to appear in court on Monday.
This is not the first time Biswas has faced legal action for her online activities. Last month, she was detained and questioned by police after criticizing the Prime Minister’s visit to the Maa Tripura Sundari temple. The Tripura Human Rights Organisation (THRO) has condemned her arrest, claiming that it is an attempt to silence criticism of the state government.
Senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, a member of THRO, stated, “For the past few days, police had been pressuring her to stop criticizing the government online, but she continued. That’s why she has been arrested. We demand her unconditional release.” Despite the condemnation from THRO, police maintain that the investigation is ongoing.
