Tripura Motha’s youth wing, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), staged a protest on June 2 in front of the office of the district magistrate (DM) of Gomati district, demanding action against him for allegedly disrespecting party supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma.
The controversy began when Tarit Kanti Chakma, the DM of Gomati district, refused to meet Pradyot Kishore Manikya on the night of May 25, despite being accompanied by the chief of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Purna Chandra Jamatia.
In response to this incident, a delegation of Tipra Motha, led by Minister of State for Industries & Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma, met with Chief Minister Manik Saha to demand action against the DM. The chief minister subsequently instructed Chief Secretary J K Sinha to investigate the matter.
Around two thousand YTF supporters gathered in front of the DM’s office in Gomati district on Monday, despite heavy rainfall, to protest and seek action against the DM. YTF president Suraj Debbarma led a group of leaders who entered the DM office premises and locked the main entrance gate as a symbolic protest.
Despite the protest, officials and employees in the DM office continued to work as usual, and there were no reports of any law and order issues. However, additional police forces were deployed in and around the DM’s office to prevent any potential disturbances.
The YTF’s protest highlights the growing tensions between the youth wing and the district administration, and underscores the importance of addressing issues of disrespect and communication between political leaders and government officials in Tripura. The investigation into the incident by the Chief Secretary will likely shed more light on the situation and determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.
