The Tripura Motha’s youth wing, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), organized a protest on June 2nd in front of the office of the district magistrate (DM) of Gomati district, demanding action against him for allegedly disrespecting Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the party supremo.
The controversy began when Tarit Kanti Chakma, the district magistrate of Gomati district, refused to meet Pradyot Kishore Manikya on May 25th, when he was accompanied by the chief of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Purna Chandra Jamatia.
In response to this incident, a delegation of Tipra Motha, led by Minister for State for Industries & Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma, met with Chief Minister Manik Saha to demand action against the DM. The chief minister then instructed Chief Secretary J K Sinha to investigate the matter.
Around two thousand YTF supporters gathered in front of the DM office in Gomati district on Monday, despite heavy rain, to protest and demand action against the DM. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Udaipur, Nirman Das, stated that the protest was peaceful and symbolic, with a group of leaders led by YTF president Suraj Debbarma locking the main entrance gate of the DM office.
While the officials and employees in the DM office continued to work as usual, additional security forces were deployed in and around the office to prevent any potential disturbances. The protest highlighted the growing tensions between the youth wing of the Tipra Motha party and the district magistrate, sparking concerns about potential further confrontations in the region.
