The closure of the Badarpur’s Gammon Bridge in Assam for major repairs will not disrupt traffic to Tripura, as alternative routes remain open to ensure smooth movement of vehicles. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has announced a two-month suspension of vehicular movement on the bridge for maintenance and rehabilitation work.
Despite this closure, Tripura Transport Secretary C K Jamatia assured that traffic to Tripura will not be affected. He stated that vehicles are returning to the state as scheduled and an alternative route through Silchar–Kalain-Guwahati is available for vehicle movement. Jamatia also mentioned that traffic on the national highway has not completely stopped according to the latest reports received by the state administration.
The Managing Director and Highway Administration of NHIDCL, Krishan Kumar, issued an official order announcing the suspension of vehicular movement at Badarpur for the repair of the Gammon Bridge over the Barak river. The closure will last for 60 days, from May 21 to July 20, 2025, in accordance with the Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002.
The NH-6, also known as the Assam-Agartala national highway, is a crucial route connecting Tripura to the rest of the country through Meghalaya and Assam. Despite the temporary closure of the bridge, efforts are being made to ensure minimal disruption to the flow of traffic and connectivity to Tripura.
