Hindu groups in Tripura are intensifying their efforts to push for a statewide ban on cow slaughter ahead of the upcoming Bakri Eid festival on June 7. The Sanatani Hindu Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have submitted memoranda to district authorities, urging strict enforcement of animal protection laws in the state.
Representatives from the Sanatani Hindu Sena have met with District Magistrates in all eight districts to advocate for administrative action prior to the festival. Khokan Biswas, assistant joint secretary of the Sena, emphasized the religious significance of cows in Sanatan Dharma and called for a complete ban on cow slaughter.
Meanwhile, the VHP has also submitted a memorandum to the West District administration, expressing concerns about potential incidents of cow slaughter during Bakri Eid. The group cited relevant provisions from the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, as well as a 1995 Supreme Court ruling on the matter.
In their memoranda, both groups stressed the importance of cows in Hinduism and urged the administration to take immediate action to prevent cow slaughter not only during the festival but also in the future. They framed their appeal as a call for legal compliance rather than communal provocation.
As of now, authorities have not issued an official response to the demands put forth by the Sanatani Hindu Sena and VHP. However, the pressure from these Hindu groups is likely to continue as Bakri Eid approaches, raising questions about the potential for conflict between religious traditions and legal regulations in Tripura.
