AGARTALA: Joining the rest of the nation in a global call for ecological restoration, Tripura observed World Environment Day today with diverse conservation programs across all districts. This year’s environment drives carried heightened significance as they aligned with the ongoing nation-wide developmental celebrations.
A central highlight of today’s mobilization was the extensive rollout of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s highly emotional and impactful campaign, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in the Name of Mother).
Shifting the focus from traditional symbolic planting, the state environmental and urban bodies announced that Tripura’s target this year is “Nurture Over Numbers.” The administrative cells will actively track the survival and post-plantation care of every single sapling rather than just recording gross plantation data.
Ramnagar Constituency Leads with Extensive Block-Level Micro-Drives
Marking the day with grassroots participation, specialized tree plantation drives were successfully executed across various local organizational units under the Ramnagar Mandal.
Ward No. 35 Mega Drive:
In the interior sectors of Ward No. 35, the green campaign was led by Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and Ramnagar Constituency MLA Dipak Majumder. Accompanied by prominent social worker Tushar Kanti Bhattacharya and local civic engineers, the Mayor planted high-value medicinal and fruit-bearing saplings along public parks and roadside buffers.
Ward No. 14 Booth-Level Drive:
Simultaneously, a distinct booth-level plantation drive was organized at Booth No. 7 under Ward No. 14. The drive was inaugurated by Ramnagar Mandal President Amitabh Bhattacharya. The ground event witnessed the active cooperation of Ward No. 14 Corporator Snigdha Das Deb, former Mandal President Tapas Kumar Dev, and environmental volunteers from local neighborhood clubs.
“We Must Ensure Each Sapling Grows into a Tree”: Mayor Dipak Majumder
Addressing environmental volunteers and local citizens at the Ward 35 briefing site, Mayor Dipak Majumder emphasized that climate action requires persistent local responsibility, not just single-day photo opportunities.
”World Environment Day cannot remain limited to just putting a plant in the soil and walking away. In previous years, thousands of seeds were planted, but many perished due to a lack of follow-up care. This year, under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ movement, we are linking environmental duty with the sacred love for our mothers.
Our clear goal this time is survival and preservation. The AMC and local mandal cells will assign specific volunteers to water, fence, and protect these new saplings throughout the monsoon and upcoming winter months. We owe it to our children and the next generation to leave behind a clean, breathable, and liveable planet. Every neighborhood must transform this green drive into a sustained citizen movement,” Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder stated to reporters.
Mass Pledges to Expand Agartala’s Urban Green Cover
Speakers across different ward blocks echoed similar sentiments, urging local families to plant trees in their private homesteads to create natural urban micro-climates that counteract rising summer temperatures.
By Friday evening, the Forest Directorate reported that thousands of indigenous saplings—including Neem, Amla, and Mahogany—had been seamlessly distributed across municipal wards, schools, and government offices, strengthening the collective public resolve to safeguard Tripura’s rich ecological heritage.
