The Mediation for the Nation campaign in Tripura is off to a strong start, with the Tripura State Legal Services Authority (TSLSA) referring a total of 996 cases to nine Mediation Centres across the state as of July 9.
The nationwide initiative, launched by the National Legal Services Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee in collaboration with the Supreme Court of India, aims to provide a speedy and cost-effective resolution to civil disputes. The campaign is being actively implemented in Tripura from July 1 to September 30, 2025.
At a press conference held at the TSLSA Conference Hall on Tuesday, Jhuma Dutta Chowdhury, Member Secretary of the Tripura State Legal Services Authority, emphasized the importance of mediation in resolving a wide range of disputes. These disputes include matrimonial conflicts, accident compensation claims, domestic violence matters, cheque bounce cases, commercial and employment-related issues, criminal conciliatory cases, consumer complaints, debt recovery, property division, eviction, land acquisition cases, and other eligible civil matters.
Chowdhury highlighted the benefits of mediation, stating that it is a recognized and effective method for resolving conflicts. By bringing both parties to a common table facilitated by a neutral mediator, settlements can be reached at a minimal cost without the need for prolonged litigation.
Currently, Tripura has nine Mediation Centres, with one located at the Tripura High Court and one in each of the eight districts. The 996 cases referred as part of the campaign are spread across the state, with the highest number of referrals coming from South Tripura district at 353 cases. Gomati followed with 193 cases, Dhalai with 104, Sepahijala with 98, and West Tripura with 94. Both Unakoti and Khowai districts have referred 68 cases each, while North Tripura has seen 18 cases referred so far.
The Mediation for the Nation campaign in Tripura is making significant progress in providing alternative dispute resolution methods and ensuring access to justice for all citizens.
