Tripura Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, has called for Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha to take strict action against those responsible for an attack on CPI(M) leaders during an all-party meeting on the Special Identification Register (SIR) in South District.
Chaudhury, who is also the CPI(M) state secretary, described the assault on party representatives inside the office of the Santirbazar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) on September 16 as “despicable” and “audacious” in a letter to the Chief Secretary.
According to Chaudhury, CPI(M) leaders Balaram Reang, Ashish Paul, and Prasun Reang were allegedly beaten by individuals he referred to as “known BJP miscreants” during the meeting at the SDM’s office. The victims were initially taken to Santirbazar District Hospital, but Chaudhury claimed that the same group of attackers tried to assault them again inside the hospital in the presence of the SDM and police officials.
Chaudhury personally intervened with the South District Magistrate to ensure the safety of the injured, who were later transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala to prevent further incidents.
In his letter, Chaudhury questioned the lack of action against the perpetrators, stating, “What kind of democratic system do we belong to, where opposition leaders are attacked inside a government office and even in a hospital, without any action against the perpetrators?” He alleged that neither the SDM nor the SDPO filed a First Information Report (FIR) or made arrests despite knowing the identities of the attackers.
Chaudhury expressed hope that the state administration would act impartially and emphasized the importance of timely intervention to restore public confidence in governance and law enforcement. He urged Chief Secretary Sinha to take strict action against those responsible for the attack to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.
