The Tripura Civil Society has called for a statewide bandh on October 13 to push for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, measures against illegal immigrants, and the speedy execution of the Tiprasa Accord.
The decision to call for the bandh was announced by Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who stated that the call was being made by a non-political group with the full support of his party. Debbarma emphasized the need for the Tripura government to take strong action against illegal immigrants in line with the directives of the Union Home Ministry. He criticized the government for failing to act like other states such as Assam, Gujarat, and Delhi.
Debbarma also expressed dissatisfaction with the Centre’s decision to extend the deadline for granting Indian citizenship to refugees, stating that it is not acceptable to civil society in Tripura. He highlighted that the Citizenship Amendment Act should not be implemented in the TTAADC areas and stressed that refugees and illegal migrants are not the same.
In addition to these demands, the Tripura Civil Society is also calling for the establishment of detention camps in every district, the formation of a Special Task Force to identify and deport illegal migrants, and the introduction of ILP in Tripura. Debbarma clarified that ILP is already operational in several northeastern states and is not discriminatory against any community.
Furthermore, the society is demanding strict action against individuals using fake SC and ST certificates and is seeking recognition of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. Debbarma reiterated the importance of promptly implementing the Tiprasa Accord, which was signed earlier this year.
The bandh is set to be observed throughout Tripura on October 13, from dawn to dusk, as a peaceful demonstration of public sentiment. The organisers are urging residents to participate in the bandh to show their support for the demands put forth by the Tripura Civil Society.
