The controversy surrounding the inauguration of development projects at the Mata Tripurasundari Temple Complex by Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to simmer, with accusations flying from both the Congress and ruling alliance partner Tipra Motha Party.
During the second day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, September 23, Tipra Motha Party MLA Pathan Lal Jamatia raised concerns about the absence of any members of the royal family at the event. He highlighted the historical significance of the royal family’s connection to the temple and questioned why they were not invited.
Fellow Tipra Motha MLA Biswajit Kalai echoed these sentiments, stating that the exclusion of the royal family members hurt the sentiments of the Tiprasa community. MLA Ranjit Debbarma also expressed surprise at the lack of royal family representation at the event, calling it a “black chapter” in the state’s history.
In response to the allegations, Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury explained that the guest list was finalized by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and included leaders from the Tipra Motha Party. He stated that East Tripura MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, who is the sister of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, was invited but could not attend due to health reasons.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma clarified that he had requested the invitation of a member of the royal family during a meeting, but ultimately the PMO decided to keep the event small in scale and invited Kriti Devi Debbarma to represent the royal family.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha also raised concerns about the lack of invitation extended to opposition members, questioning whether the event was meant only for the BJP.
In conclusion, Tripura Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized that the guest list was initially decided at the state level but was later changed by the PMO. He expressed regret if anyone’s sentiments were hurt and stressed the importance of being more careful in the future.
The controversy surrounding the event reflects underlying tensions between political parties and the royal family in Tripura, highlighting the complexities of managing such events in a diverse and politically charged environment.
