The District Administration of North Tripura has taken a significant step towards promoting water conservation with the launch of the “Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra” campaign. The initiative aims to construct 50,000 soak pits within a span of just two days, on November 3 and 4.
District Magistrate Chandni Chandran has described the campaign as a “historic people’s mission” to ensure that every drop of rainwater is saved for the future. She emphasized that the initiative is not just a government program, but a movement towards a water-secure tomorrow.
Soak pits, although simple in design, play a crucial role in groundwater recharge, reducing flooding, and enhancing soil health and agricultural productivity. Chandran highlighted that each soak pit contributes significantly to sustainable water management with minimal cost and effort.
To kick off the campaign, District Officials, including the Additional District Magistrate (PP) and the Swachh Bharat Mission team, demonstrated soak pit construction at the District Magistrate’s residence. The video of the demonstration will be shared widely to guide and inspire communities to undertake similar efforts in their own homes, villages, and institutions.
Chandran emphasized the core message of the campaign, which is to “Catch the rain where it falls,” emphasizing the importance of community participation in water conservation efforts. The District Administration has called upon citizens, panchayats, schools, and organizations to actively participate in the Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra, aiming to make it a collective success and set a new benchmark for environmental stewardship.
The initiative is expected to not only promote water conservation but also raise awareness about the importance of sustainable water management practices among the public.
