In a major move to declutter the capital’s streets, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Shri Dipak Majumdar conducted a field inspection of the ongoing eviction drive at the Jackson Gate area today. Reiterating the administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy towards illegal occupation of public land, the Mayor appealed to traders to voluntarily remove unauthorized structures before the law takes its course.
The visit comes as part of a year-long citywide enforcement campaign aimed at transforming Agartala into a disciplined and pedestrian-friendly urban center.
Demolition at Jackson Gate and New Parking Plans
The Jackson Gate area, a vital commercial hub, has long been plagued by illegal stalls occupying government land. Mayor Majumdar noted that while the AMC had issued formal notices to these traders well in advance, many failed to comply.
- Strict Enforcement: AMC teams were seen dismantling illegal shops that ignored the evacuation notices.
- Repurposing Land: The Mayor announced that the reclaimed land at Jackson Gate will be converted into a designated parking zone. This move is expected to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion in the surrounding market area.
- Rehabilitation: The Mayor assured that for those who cooperate, the Corporation has already arranged alternative vending zones to ensure their livelihoods are not entirely disrupted.
Midnight Deadline for Roadside Vendors
In a significant directive to street vendors and hawkers, the Mayor clarified the rules regarding operating hours and road space:
”Vendors must ensure that their carts and stalls are completely removed from the roads by 11:00 PM every night. Any shop or structure found on the streets after this hour will be seized or removed by the AMC task force. Our roads are meant for vehicles and our footpaths for pedestrians.”
ML Plaza Next on the Radar
The Mayor further informed the media that the crackdown is moving toward other high-traffic zones.
- Notices Issued: Shopkeepers near the ML Plaza area have already been served with eviction notices for encroaching on public space.
- Final Warning: If these encroachments are not cleared within the stipulated timeframe, the AMC will initiate a demolition drive similar to the one at Jackson Gate.
A Year-Long Commitment
Mayor Dipak Majumdar emphasized that these are not one-off operations. The AMC, in coordination with the Traffic Department and the Smart City Mission, will continue these drives throughout the year.
”We want to make Agartala a beautiful and organized city. We are ready to help and rehabilitate those who cooperate with us, but we will not compromise on the safety and convenience of the general public,” the Mayor stated.
