AGARTALA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) organized a massive protest rally and public meeting in the capital today, launching a multi-pronged attack on the Modi government’s foreign and domestic policies. The demonstration focused on the skyrocketing prices of cooking gas (LPG) and what the party termed as the “abject surrender” of the Indian government to US imperialist pressures.
A large number of party workers and supporters marched through the heart of Agartala, carrying red flags and placards, before culminating in a heated street corner meeting.
LPG Price Hike: “A Blow to the Common Kitchen”
The CPIM leadership expressed grave concern over the “abnormal” increase in the price of fuel and cooking gas.
- Economic Burden: Speakers highlighted that the frequent hikes have made it impossible for rural and middle-class families to sustain their daily lives.
- Policy Critique: The party alleged that while international crude oil prices fluctuate, the benefits are never passed on to the Indian consumer, pointing toward “crony capitalism.”
Middle East Crisis & National Sovereignty
A major part of the protest was dedicated to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East and its impact on Indian citizens.
”The Modi government has surrendered India’s independent foreign policy to the dictates of US imperialism. This shift has compromised the safety of millions of Indians working in the Middle East,” a senior CPIM leader stated during the rally.
The Party’s Key Demands:
- Evacuation of Nationals: The CPIM demanded that the Union Government take immediate and proactive steps to ensure the safe return of all Indian workers currently stranded or feeling insecure in conflict zones across the Middle East.
- Independent Foreign Policy: A call was made to return to a non-aligned and sovereign foreign policy that prioritizes national interest over “Washington’s agenda.”
- Price Subsidies: Immediate restoration of subsidies on LPG cylinders to provide relief to the common man.
Call for Resistance
The meeting concluded with a call to the people of Tripura to unite against the “anti-people” policies of the BJP-led Center. The leadership warned that if the fuel prices are not rolled back and the safety of Indians abroad is not guaranteed, the party would intensify its agitation across the state.
