AGARTALA: In a formal ceremony held at the Tripura Legislative Assembly today, Shri Jahar Chakraborty took his oath as the newly elected Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the 56-Dharmanagar constituency. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by the Hon’ble Speaker of the Tripura Assembly, Shri Ram Pada Jamatia.
The ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, members of the state cabinet, and several high-ranking party officials.
A Decisive Mandate for Development
The swearing-in follows Jahar Chakraborty’s resounding victory in the recently concluded Dharmanagar by-election (results declared on May 4, 2026). The BJP candidate secured a massive margin of over 18,000 votes, effectively retaining the seat for the saffron party.
By-Election Context:
- The Vacancy: The seat fell vacant following the unfortunate demise of the former Speaker and veteran leader Biswa Bandhu Sen in December last year.
- The Result: Jahar Chakraborty polled approximately 24,291 votes, comfortably defeating his nearest rivals from the CPI(M) and Congress.
- Significance: This victory is seen as a strong endorsement of the “Double Engine” government’s policies in North Tripura.
“Committed to Dharmanagar’s Progress”: Jahar Chakraborty
Immediately after taking his oath, the newly minted MLA expressed his gratitude to the people of Dharmanagar and the party leadership.
”I am honored to serve the people of Dharmanagar. This victory belongs to the grassroot workers and the vision of PM Narendra Modi and CM Dr. Manik Saha. My priority will be to complete the pending infrastructure projects and ensure that the benefits of state and central schemes reach every household in my constituency,” Jahar Chakraborty stated.
Chief Minister’s Congratulatory Note
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated the new legislator, noting that Chakraborty’s entry into the Assembly would further strengthen the government’s ability to execute development plans in the northern districts.
Key Highlights of the Event:
- Presence: Senior ministers including Ratan Lal Nath and Sushanta Chowdhury were present to welcome the new colleague.
- Proceedings: The Speaker, Ram Pada Jamatia (who assumed office in March 2026), conducted the session with traditional parliamentary decorum.
- Next Steps: Following the oath, the new MLA is expected to hold a series of administrative meetings in Dharmanagar to kickstart his local office operations.
The Current Assembly Composition
With this induction, the BJP maintains its strong majority in the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly. The Dharmanagar win is particularly significant as it demonstrates the party’s ability to hold onto its core urban and semi-urban voter base in North Tripura even amidst a multi-cornered contest.
