AGARTALA: Highlighting the long-standing demands and grievances of retired bank employees, the All India Retired Regional Rural Bank Welfare Society (AIRRRBWS) organized its 2nd Triennial General Conference today at the Agartala Press Club. The conference served as a platform to discuss pension disparities, medical benefits, and the overall welfare of retirees who served in India’s Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).
The event was attended by Agartala Press Club President Shri Pranab Sarkar as the Chief Guest, alongside senior officials of the society and veteran bank employees from various districts of Tripura.
A Focus on Parity and Pension Rights
The conference primarily focused on the ongoing struggle for “Complete Parity” in terminal benefits between RRB retirees and their counterparts in Nationalized Sponsor Banks.
Key Issues Discussed:
- Pension Revision: Delegates expressed concern over the stagnation of pension scales and demanded immediate revision in line with the latest bipartite settlements in the banking industry.
- Medical Insurance: The Society highlighted the lack of affordable and comprehensive health insurance schemes for RRB retirees, which becomes a critical burden in old age.
- Social Security: Leaders emphasized that despite the Supreme Court’s favorable rulings in the past, several administrative hurdles remain in the smooth disbursement of arrears and updated pension benefits.
“The Voice of the Veterans”: Key Speeches
Addressing the gathering, Pranab Sarkar lauded the retirees for their contribution to the rural economy of Tripura during their service years.
”The officers and employees of Regional Rural Banks are the ones who took banking to the doorsteps of the most remote villages in our state. It is unfortunate that they have to fight for their rightful dues after retirement. The Agartala Press Club stands in solidarity with your democratic movement for dignity and security,” Pranab Sarkar remarked.
Senior officials of the Welfare Society presented the Triennial Report, detailing the organizational activities over the last three years and the legal battles fought at the national level.
Election of New Committee
Following the inaugural and technical sessions, the delegate session was held to elect the new Executive Committee for the next three-year term.
- The members unanimously resolved to strengthen the “All India” coordination to pressure the Union Finance Ministry and NABARD regarding the implementation of pending benefits.
- A resolution was passed to conduct district-level outreach programs to bring more retirees under the welfare umbrella.
The Path Forward
The conference concluded with a call to action, urging the central government to treat RRB retirees at par with those from commercial banks, as they performed identical duties under the same regulatory frameworks. The newly elected committee is expected to submit a fresh memorandum to the Chairman of Tripura Gramin Bank and the Governor of Tripura in the coming week.
