AGARTALA: Highlighting a alarming surge in political violence in the Takarjala and Jampui Jala areas, a high-level delegation of the Tipra Motha Party met with the Director General of Police (DGP), Shri Amitabh Ranjan, today. The delegation, led by Takarjala MLA Biswajit Kalai and MDC Suraj Debbarma, submitted a formal memorandum seeking immediate intervention to restore law and order in the region.
The leaders alleged that since the conclusion of the TTAADC General Elections 2026, residents of the constituency have been living under constant fear due to repeated attacks, yet the local police remain “inactive.”
A Pattern of Violence: Key Allegations
The memorandum detailed a series of violent incidents that have plagued the Sepahijala district over the past month.
Recent Incidents Cited:
- April 10 Clash: A major violent confrontation near the residence of BJP candidate Nirmal Debbarma left several people injured, including the Sepahijala Superintendent of Police, who was assaulted with sharp weapons.
- May 9 Bombings: Four bomb explosions reportedly took place at various locations in Jampui Jala and Takarjala, allegedly targeting the homes of Tipra Motha supporters.
- Targeted Firing: A member of the Youth Tipra Federation was reportedly fired upon recently, escalating the sense of panic in the tribal belt.
“Selective Inaction”: Leaders Slam Police Neutrality
Speaking to reporters outside the Police Headquarters, MLA Biswajit Kalai expressed deep frustration over the lack of arrests despite clear evidence and high-profile injuries.
”It has been over a month since the SP of Sepahijala was injured in an attack, yet the main culprits are roaming free. We have information that several accused individuals are being sheltered at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala under political protection. The police are acting selectively—targeting our workers while ignoring those who are openly using firearms and bombs,” Biswajit Kalai stated.
MDC Suraj Debbarma added that the neutrality of law enforcement has been compromised by “political influence,” leading to a complete breakdown of public trust in the Jampui Jala area.
Core Demands for Peace
The delegation placed a three-point demand before the DGP to prevent further escalation:
- Immediate Arrests: Apprehending the individuals named in the April 10 and May 9 FIRs without further delay.
- Night Patrolling: Increasing security presence and night-time patrolling in vulnerable hamlets of Takarjala.
- Special Task Force: Deployment of a neutral task force to oversee investigations and ensure they are free from local political bias.
Administrative Response
DGP Amitabh Ranjan reportedly assured the delegation that the police are committed to maintaining peace and that additional forces would be deployed in sensitive zones. He emphasized that the law will take its own course regardless of political affiliation.
The situation in Takarjala remains tense, with many families reportedly staying indoors after dusk. The Tipra Motha leadership warned that if peace is not restored within the week, they would be forced to launch a democratic mass protest across the district.
