AGARTALA: In a landmark development for the healthcare sector of Tripura, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned a massive ₹273.46 crore for the expansion and infrastructure development of the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC). Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha announced the news today, describing it as a historic step toward making Tripura a hub for medical education in the Northeast.
The funding, provided under a centrally sponsored scheme, will facilitate a record-breaking increase in both undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (PG) seats starting from the 2026-27 academic session.
Record Expansion of Medical Seats
The sanctioned amount is divided into two major components to upgrade the academic and clinical capacity of AGMC and GBP Hospital:
1. Undergraduate (MBBS) Expansion:
- Fund Allocated: ₹150 Crore (Central share: ₹135 Crore).
- Seat Increase: MBBS intake will rise from 150 to 250 seats (including 15 seats for the EWS category).
- Impact: This 100-seat jump is the highest single-year increase for the college.
2. Postgraduate (PG) Expansion:
- Fund Allocated: ₹123.46 Crore (Central share: ₹111.11 Crore).
- Seat Increase: 83 additional PG seats across 19 critical and specialty disciplines.
- New Capacity: This brings the total PG seats in the state to 196.
Strengthening Specialty Departments
The 83 new PG seats will be distributed across 19 specialized fields, significantly reducing the state’s dependency on outside medical institutions for expert care.
Key Disciplines Include:
- General Medicine & General Surgery
- Paediatrics & Anaesthesia
- Dermatology, Venereology & Psychiatry
- Pathology, Microbiology & Forensic Medicine
- Respiratory Medicine, ENT & Ophthalmology
“A Vision for Healthy Tripura”: CM Manik Saha
Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha—himself a medical professional—emphasized that this investment will secure the future of aspiring doctors in the state.
”With this expansion, Tripura will now have a total of 550 MBBS seats across its institutions. This is a record increase achieved in the last four years. Our government is committed to ensuring that our youth do not have to leave the state for quality medical education and that our citizens receive the best specialist treatment right here in Agartala,” the Chief Minister stated.
Administrative Road Ahead
The Ministry has requested the State Government to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) immediately to begin the construction of new lecture halls, laboratories, and hostel facilities. Officials noted that the recruitment of additional faculty members will also be prioritized to meet the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines for the increased seat capacity.
This announcement comes shortly after the state cabinet approved the establishment of new Ayurvedic and Homeopathic colleges (60 seats each), signaling a comprehensive overhaul of Tripura’s medical education landscape in 2026.
