AGARTALA: In a major administrative announcement, the District Magistrate of West Tripura, Dr. Vishal Kumar (IAS), confirmed today that the first phase of the much-anticipated Census 2026-27 will commence across the district from August 1 to August 30, 2026. Addressing a press conference at the DM Office, Dr. Kumar detailed the extensive preparations being made for the massive exercise of house-listing and housing census.
This phase marks the beginning of the decennial national project, which was delayed for several years and is now set to provide updated demographic data for the state.
Phase I: House-Listing and Housing Census
The primary objective of the first phase is to map every structure and household to ensure that no resident is left out during the actual population count.
Key Focus Areas:
- Duration: One full month, starting from August 1.
- Data Points: Enumerators will collect data regarding house types, availability of amenities (drinking water, electricity, sanitation), and assets owned by the household.
- Digital Integration: For the first time, the census will be conducted primarily through a mobile-app-based digital platform, reducing paper usage and speeding up data processing.
Manpower and Training
Dr. Vishal Kumar highlighted that a vast network of government employees, including teachers and administrative staff, will be mobilized for this mission.
- Training Modules: Specialized training sessions for supervisors and enumerators will begin in June to familiarize them with the digital entry tools.
- Security & Supervision: Sector officers will be appointed to monitor the accuracy of the data collected in both urban Agartala and rural blocks of the West Tripura district.
“Accuracy is Paramount”: DM Dr. Vishal Kumar
The District Magistrate urged the citizens of West Tripura to cooperate fully with the visiting census officials and provide accurate information.
”The Census is the foundation for all future government planning and welfare schemes. From the delimitation of constituencies to the allocation of food subsidies, everything depends on these numbers. I request the public to verify the identity cards of the enumerators and assist them in this national duty. We are committed to making this a smooth and error-free process,” Dr. Vishal Kumar stated.
Important Note for Residents
The DM clarified that this phase does not involve the NPR (National Population Register) or citizenship verification; it is strictly a socio-economic house-listing exercise. Residents who are away from their permanent homes during the month of August will have the option to provide data through designated local help desks.
Administrative Coordination
Following the press conference, a coordination meeting was held with the Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and BDOs of West Tripura to finalize the logistical requirements, including transportation and internet connectivity for the digital tablets to be used by the field staff.
