AGARTALA: Strengthening regional security frameworks and giving a major fillip to the state’s heritage tourism sector, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Agartala this evening on a high-profile two-day official visit to Tripura.
The Home Minister landed at the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport under an airtight security blanket, fresh from chairing the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya earlier in the day.
He was warmly received at the tarmac by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, senior cabinet ministers, the Chief Secretary, and top-ranking officials from the state police and central paramilitary directorates. Following his arrival, the Home Minister’s motorcade proceeded through the pre-cleared traffic corridors of the capital city to the Circuit House.
High-Stakes Itinerary: Smart Fencing and Border Security Audits
The central focus of the Home Minister’s visit lies heavily on tightening international border protocols. Tripura shares a crucial, 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, which remains a key area for counter-infiltration operations.
Key Institutional Engagements Scheduled:
- Lankamura Outpost Inspection: Home Minister Amit Shah will personally visit the Lankamura Border Outpost (BOP) on the India-Bangladesh border in West Tripura district to inspect operational readiness on the ground.
- Interacting with Jawans: The Minister is slated to spend dedicated time interacting with the frontline jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) to boost morale and understand border management dynamics.
- The Smart Border Project: High-level security evaluation meetings will be held with state and central agencies to review the deployment of radars, drones, and advanced surveillance grids to establish an impregnable border defense.
Bhoomi Pujan of Taj Pushpabanta Palace Heritage Hotel
Apart from national security reviews, Amit Shah’s visit will mark a landmark moment for Tripura’s cultural infrastructure. On Friday, June 5, the Home Minister, alongside Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, will participate in the formal Bhoomi Pujan (foundation stone-laying ceremony) of the ultra-luxury Taj Pushpabanta Palace Hotel.
The project involves the careful restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic Pushpabanta Palace (the Old Raj Bhavan premises), beautifully blending the legacy of the Manikya Dynasty with the premium hospitality standards of the Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL). The iconic project aims to firmly establish Agartala on the global luxury tourism map.
Tight Security Blankets and Route Control
With the VVIP stay active over the next 24 hours, the West Tripura District Administration has kept specialized Quick Response Teams (QRT), Tripura State Rifles (TSR) commandos, and central security forces on maximum alert. Following yesterday’s convoy trial runs, intermittent route diversions and strict parking restrictions will remain operational around the Lichubagan, Agartala airport road, and capital core areas to ensure a seamless transit framework for the central delegation.
