AGARTALA: Taking proactive steps ahead of the intense monsoon spells, Member of Parliament (MP) Rajib Bhattacharjee conducted a comprehensive field inspection of the urban drainage and water evacuation systems in Ward No. 30 of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) today.
The high-level visit was organized to review ongoing desiltation drives and identify critical structural bottlenecks that trigger localized waterlogging during heavy downpours.
Accompanied by AMC engineering wings, local ward corporators, and urban development officials, the Member of Parliament walked through several vulnerable residential sectors and commercial lanes within the ward to assess the operational capacity of both primary and secondary stormwater drains.
Evaluating Grassroots Infrastructure Ahead of Monsoons
Ward No. 30 has historically faced challenges during peak rainy seasons due to its low-lying topography and rapid urban expansion, which often strains the existing drainage network.
Key Technical Focus Areas Inspected by the MP:
- Desiltation of Primary Channels: The delegation reviewed the progress of manual and mechanical desiltation blocks across the main drainage trunks that channel rainwater away from residential clusters into peripheral canals.
- Encroachment Assessments: Structural engineers pointed out specific locations where minor commercial encroachments and improperly laid utility lines are constricting water flow, leading to immediate backlogs during sudden cloudbursts.
- Waste Blockage Checkpoints: MP Bhattacharjee inspected critical intersections where domestic plastic waste and garbage accumulation frequently choke the underground culverts.
“Every Ward Must Have Seamless Water Evacuation Systems”: MP Rajib Bhattacharjee
Interacting with local residents and neighborhood welfare committees during the inspection layout, MP Rajib Bhattacharjee instructed municipal engineers to deploy extra manpower to clear remaining blockages on a war footing.
”Our priority is to ensure that the citizens of Agartala do not face the distress of water entering their homes during the monsoons. Ward No. 30 requires synchronized maintenance because even a minor blockage in these secondary drains can cause artificial flooding across entire residential blocks within hours.
I have clearly directed the Agartala Municipal Corporation engineers to accelerate the cleaning process and eliminate all structural bottlenecks immediately. We cannot rely on temporary solutions anymore. The central and state governments are working hand-in-hand to permanently upgrade Agartala’s urban infrastructure under modern smart city blueprints. I urge the local residents to also cooperate by not dumping plastic waste into public drains, as citizen participation is vital to keeping our city clean and flood-free,” MP Rajib Bhattacharjee stated during the field briefing.
Time-Bound Action Plan Mandated for Municipal Cells
Following the site assessment, the MP directed the AMC ward committee to set up a localized 24/7 monsoon monitoring cell. This cell will be responsible for deploying high-power water pumps in low-lying pockets of Ward No. 30 during emergency rainfall events, ensuring minimal disruption to daily life and smooth traffic flow across the capital city’s southern sectors.
