AGARTALA | June 15, 2026: Bringing a dramatic end to the day’s intense political demonstrations, the West Agartala Police finally intervened and detained several protesters, including the State President of the Youth Congress, Nil Kamal Saha, as the situation threatened to spiral out of control.
Following the detention, the police immediately escorted the group to the AD Nagar Police Line ground. The arrest followed a series of heated protests staged by the Youth Congress over various local and administrative grievances.
Rapid Escalation Leads to Police Intervention
The demonstrations, which began earlier in the day, were part of a planned agitational program organized by the Youth Congress to press for their demands. Tensions mounted significantly as activists attempted to breach security cordons near key government administrative zones. Law enforcement authorities, citing the maintenance of public order and the prohibition of unauthorized gatherings in sensitive areas, moved to disperse the crowd after several rounds of failed negotiations.
”Our peaceful democratic protest was met with heavy-handedness by the state machinery. We were simply raising our voices for the legitimate concerns of the unemployed youth and the issues plagueing the state’s administrative systems. Detaining us in the police line will not silence our movement; it will only strengthen our resolve,” Youth Congress State President Nil Kamal Saha stated while being escorted into the police vehicle.
Situation Tense but Under Control
Heavy police deployment remains stationed around the AD Nagar Police Line as a precautionary measure. While the immediate protest has been cleared from the city’s main thoroughfares, supporters of the detained Youth Congress leaders are gathering near the police facility, raising slogans and demanding the unconditional and immediate release of their office-bearers.
Senior police officials have indicated that the detainees will be processed as per standard legal procedure and will remain under detention while authorities assess the impact of today’s disruption to public movement. The capital city remains under high surveillance as additional security units patrol the downtown commercial areas to prevent any fresh flare-ups.
