AGARTALA | June 15, 2026: Discontent and deep anxiety have gripped the local business community near Agartala’s busy Netaji Choumuhani area after the administration issued a strict eviction notice, ordering 53 shopkeepers to completely clear out their establishments within the next three days.
What has worsened the panic among the affected businessmen is the complete lack of any alternative rehabilitation arrangements or concrete relocation plans from the government’s end.
Eviction Threat Leaves Livelihoods Hanging in the Balance
The market complex, located adjacent to the prominent Netaji Choumuhani intersection, has been a bustling commercial hub housing dozens of retail and wholesale traders for decades. According to the affected traders, administrative officials suddenly handed down the three-day ultimatum without organizing any prior stakeholders’ consultation or baseline survey to protect their livelihoods.
Furthermore, a cloud of confusion surrounds the newly constructed building directly on the opposite side of the road. While rumors suggest the structure was intended to relocate displaced traders, the administrative authorities have maintained absolute silence, keeping the shopkeepers completely in the dark regarding who will be allotted space there.
”We have been running our businesses here legally for generations, paying regular taxes and municipal fees. Now, out of nowhere, we are being told to pack up and leave within 72 hours. There is absolutely no clear word on compensation or alternative stalls. We are hearing conflicting reports about the building across the street, but the administration is refusing to give us anything in writing,” an aggrieved shop owner stated.
Traders Appeal for Direct Chief Minister Intercession
Fearing an overnight loss of their sole source of income, the 53 affected families have unitedly appealed to the state government for immediate relief. Business associations in the Netaji Choumuhani sector have called for a temporary stay on the eviction notice until a transparent rehabilitation framework is officially mapped out.
Currently, the helpless shopkeepers are looking directly toward Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and the urban development ministry, hoping for an empathetic administrative intervention that balances city infrastructure modernization with the preservation of local traders’ rights.
