AGARTALA | June 29, 2026: To honor the monumental contributions of the father of modern statistics in India, the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Government of Tripura, today celebrated the 20th National Statistics Day with a high-level seminar at the Pragya Bhavan auditorium in Agartala. The state-level event was organized to mark the 133rd birth anniversary of the legendary statistician and physicist, Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
The convention brought together senior data analysts, planning executives, and departmental researchers to deliberate on modernizing administrative data streams for more effective policy framing.
Data-Driven Governance and Modernizing Regional Metrics
The seminar focused heavily on the institutional integration of real-time data sampling to improve the delivery of rural and urban welfare schemes. Addressing the gathering, the Director of the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Shri Ratan Biswas, highlighted how Professor Mahalanobis’s foundational methodologies—such as the Mahalanobis distance and large-scale sample surveys—continue to guide India’s national planning models.
The department head stressed that localized data accuracy is vital for tracking economic growth indicators across Tripura’s shifting sectors.

Honoring his legacy means committing ourselves to absolute data integrity and transparent analytical reporting,” Directorate Head Shri Ratan Biswas stated during his inaugural address.
Core Objectives Prioritized by the Statistics Directorate
During the technical sessions, the senior panel outlined an actionable roadmap to upgrade the state’s statistical infrastructure:
- Digitization of Field Surveys: Phasing out manual documentation by training block-level statistical investigators to use mobile-app-based data entry systems for real-time validation.
- Inter-Departmental Data Sync: Setting up a unified statistical data repository to allow the finance, planning, and social welfare departments to coordinate metrics smoothly.
- Skill Development Units: Planning specialized training workshops for regional planning officers on modern predictive analysis and demographic data modeling.
The 20th Statistics Day program concluded with an interactive panel discussion involving university researchers and state officers, followed by the distribution of commendation certificates to field investigators for exceptional data collection work in remote terrains.
