Agartala, April 10, 2025: A serious accident occurred on Thursday morning on the Damcherra-Khedacherra route in the North Tripura district, where a 12-wheeled lorry carrying cement plunged into a ditch following the collapse of a bridge. The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety and the potential for significant casualties.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the bridge appeared to be structurally weak and unable to bear the weight of the heavily loaded lorry. “We heard a loud crash and rushed to the spot. The bridge simply gave way under the lorry’s weight,” a resident reported.
Residents and rescue teams swiftly initiated efforts to extricate the driver and his assistant, who were trapped in the wreckage. While the full extent of their injuries is still being assessed, initial reports suggest they may have sustained critical injuries. They were taken to Damcherra Primary Health Centre.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the bridge collapse. “We are investigating the structural integrity of the bridge and the factors that contributed to its failure. If any negligence is found in the bridge’s construction or maintenance, strict action will be taken,” stated a district administration official.
This incident has highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive review of infrastructure maintenance and safety standards in the region to prevent similar accidents in the future. The collapse has also disrupted traffic on the Damcherra-Khedacherra route, causing inconvenience to commuters.
