AGARTALA | AUGUST 24, 2026: In a massive show of unity and strength, three prominent indigenous organizations—the Ganamukti Parishad (GMP), Tribal Youth Federation (TYF), and Tribal Students’ Union (TSU)—staged a joint mass sit-in demonstration (Gan-Dharna) in front of the Swami Vivekananda Statue in Agartala.
The demonstration focused on demanding the immediate cancellation of flawed recruitment processes within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), calling for fresh, transparent recruitment to fill all vacant posts, and pressing the Central Government to pass the long-pending 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
Core Demands Raised at the Demonstration
- Scrapping Irregular TTAADC Recruitment: Leaders vehemently criticized recent recruitment drives conducted within the Autonomous District Council, alleging widespread administrative irregularities and nepotism. They demanded an immediate revocation of all controversial selection lists.
- Transparent Selection & Filling of Vacancies: The constituent bodies urged authorities to launch a fair, merit-based, and transparent recruitment framework to swiftly fill all pending vacancies across various departments in the TTAADC, ensuring equal opportunities for educated tribal youth.
- Passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill: The organizations reiterated their demand for the Parliament to pass the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill. They emphasized that this bill is vital for granting direct funding, expanding administrative powers, and ensuring financial autonomy for Sixth Schedule councils in Tripura and the wider Northeast region.
- Protection of Youth Livelihoods: Speakers expressed deep concern over rising unemployment among indigenous youth, warning that delays in transparent job creation and constitutional empowerment are threatening the socio-economic stability of tribal communities.
Joint Leadership Commitment
Addressing the large gathering of students, youth, and council workers, leaders of the GMP, TYF, and TSU issued a joint ultimatum to administrative authorities:
“The future of indigenous youth cannot be compromised through flawed recruitment schemes or political maneuvering. We demand an immediate cancellation of all disputed TTAADC hiring processes and the initiation of a fresh, transparent recruitment mechanism to fill every vacant post. Furthermore, the Centre must immediately pass the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill to truly empower the Autonomous District Council. If our demands are ignored, this joint movement will be escalated into a wider statewide agitation.”
