AGARTALA | SEPTEMBER 2, 2026: In a major anti-narcotics crackdown ahead of the upcoming festive season, personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted a youth carrying a massive consignment of contraband cannabis at the Agartala Railway Station.
The arrested youth has been identified as 21-year-old Ayan Debbarma. Police officials estimated the street black-market value of the seized contraband at approximately ₹5 lakh.
Operation & Seizure Details
- Intervention at Platform No. 1: Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding interstate drug trafficking, a joint team of GRP and RPF personnel launched a targeted surveillance drive across Platform No. 1.
- Modus Operandi: Ayan Debbarma was intercepted while attempting to board a long-distance train. Upon searching two suspicious backpacks in his possession, officers recovered 21.815 kg of dry cannabis (ganja) neatly packed into multiple packets.
- NDPS Case Registered: The suspect was immediately taken into custody at the Agartala GRP Police Station, and a case under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him.
Investigation & Interrogation
During preliminary interrogation, police officials sought to uncover the origin of the contraband and identify the recipient network outside the state. Investigators are questioning the accused to trace local suppliers who handed over the backpacks near the railway corridor.
He will be produced before the West Tripura District Court with a prayer for police custody to facilitate deeper interrogation into the interstate smuggling racket.
