AGARTALA: In a massive show of public outrage, thousands of workers, farmers, jhumias, and agricultural laborers took to the streets across Tripura on Monday as Left trade unions and peasant fronts organized a historic ‘Jail Bharo’ civil disobedience movement. Mobilized under the joint banner of CITU, AIKS, GMP, and TKMU, the widespread agitation paralyzed key locations across 8 districts.
Protesters targeted the BJP-led government over the collapse of law and order, rising inflation, widespread corruption, and systemic attacks on democratic institutions.
Key Highlights from Left Front Leaders
CITU State Secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta:
- Over 25,000 protesters joined demonstrations across 20+ locations in all 8 districts.
- Severe injuries were reported during clashes and scuffles with police force barricades. CITU State Committee Secretary Samar Chakraborty suffered a severe hand injury requiring immediate surgery, while a student protester was hospitalized following a fall during the agitation.
- “The public has risen against this incompetent administration. If the government fails to take a lesson from this mass uprising, an even larger movement will follow,” Dutta warned.
AIKS State Secretary Pabitra Kar:
- High turnout of women and agricultural workers despite peak farming season work.
- Alleged malicious intent by the Tripura Police regarding heavy barricading in front of a private nursing home/hospital near Paradise Chowmuhani.
- “The role of the police was suspicious and ulteriorly motivated. Despite their obstacles, farmers and laborers showed unmatched resilience,” Kar stated.
GMP General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma:
- Unprecedented public response witnessed across both ADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) and Non-ADC areas.
- Massive participation of Jhumias, daily wage laborers, youth, women, and students.
- “People in every corner of Tripura are deeply aggrieved. The public has awakened against this government’s utter failure,” Debbarma declared.
TKMU State Secretary Shyamal Dey:
- Over 25,000 agricultural workers marched, overcoming police obstruction.
- “The people have communicated their message to the government in the only language it understands. The mood of mass resistance was clearly visible,” Dey noted.
CITU State President Manik Dey:
- Warned that if the current regime fails to restore the rule of law and curb rampant corruption, the Left fronts will issue a direct call for a government change (Sarkar Parivartan).
- “Lawlessness is at an all-time high, and corruption has taken deep root. Today was a peaceful expression of mass anger, but it serves as a precursor to a much larger political movement,” Dey affirmed.
