AGARTALA: Following directions issued by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte announced a comprehensive statewide road maintenance drive to repair and restore damaged roads across Tripura before the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat on Monday evening, PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte stated that the state government has set a strict deadline of September 30, 2026, to complete all identified road repairs while maintaining uncompromising quality standards.
Major Road Repair Target & Blueprint
Following a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at the TIFT War Room, the PWD and collaborating agencies have mapped out a massive infrastructure restoration initiative:
- Total Scope: Over 1,157 roads spanning approximately 2,664 kilometres across all wings have been targeted for repair and resurfacing.
- PWD (Roads & Bridges): 1,006 roads covering nearly 1,622 km will be restored.
- PWD (PMGSY): 119 rural road stretches covering 665 km have been identified for immediate repairs.
- National Highways & NHIDCL: 32 key routes comprising 377 km are scheduled for maintenance, including ongoing work on critical stretches like NH-08 (Champaknagar to Teliamura).
Key Focus Areas & Quality Control
- Monsoon Impact Mitigation: Heavy, unseasonal rainfall since March severely damaged blacktop roads statewide. PWD utilized cold-mix technology for emergency pothole filling during the peak rainy period.
- Priority Sectors: Strict instructions have been issued to field engineers—including Superintending and Executive Engineers—to regularly inspect field sites. Priority is given to roads connecting district/sub-divisional headquarters, bus terminals, railway stations, hospitals, and major Durga Puja pandal routes.
- Sufficient Funding: The Secretary confirmed that adequate funds are available with the department, ensuring no financial constraints hamper execution speed or quality control.
