AGARTALA | AUGUST 31, 2026: Cracking down on street crime in the capital city ahead of the festive season, personnel from the NCC Police Station and Abhaynagar Police Outpost arrested a youth in connection with a daylight gold chain snatching targeting a female student in Abhaynagar.
Police have also impounded the electric auto-rickshaw (registration number TR 01 L 4366) utilized during the crime. However, the stolen gold chain is yet to be recovered.
Incident & Investigation Details
- Modus Operandi: According to police sources, the incident took place on August 29 behind the Shantigami Club while two female students were walking toward the local Buddha Mandir. An electric auto-rickshaw abruptly intercepted them, enabling an occupant to alight, forcibly snatch the gold chain from one student, and speed away.
- CCTV Tracking & Arrest: Following a formal complaint, officers analyzed local CCTV feeds along the Abhaynagar corridor to identify and trace the vehicle. Based on surveillance leads, police raided a location in Bitarban and apprehended the suspect.
- Absconding Accomplices: During custodial interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the snatching and revealed that the stolen gold ornament is in the possession of two absconding accomplices.
Police Action & Preventive Drives
Investigators have launched targeted raids across suspected hideouts to arrest the two missing accomplices and retrieve the stolen gold chain. The arrested youth is being produced before the court with a plea for police remand to facilitate further questioning.
In light of the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, NCC Police officials affirmed that citywide surveillance, night patrolling, and preventive anti-snatching drives have been intensified across Agartala to curb petty crimes.
