AGARTALA | June 19, 2026: A wave of initial confusion and ritualistic dilemma among households in Tripura has finally been settled by scriptural experts just ahead of the auspicious occasion of Jamai Sasthi, scheduled for tomorrow.
Because the traditional festival has fallen within the Hindu calendar month of Ashadh this year instead of the customary Jaishtha, many families—and anxious sons-in-law—were left wondering whether the conventional ritual of pouring sacred water (mmathay jol dewa) and performing the complete blessing ceremony could be legitimately held.
Scriptural Clarification Clears the Air
To resolve the widespread dilemma, leading scholars and pandits have come forward with specific scriptural rulings. According to the expert pandits, there is absolutely no religious bar or restriction when it comes to honoring and blessing “old” or experienced sons-in-law. The annual rites, feasts, and traditional greetings can proceed seamlessly for them.
However, the pandits have issued a subtle word of caution for families with “new” sons-in-law (those celebrating their very first Jamai Sasthi post-marriage). The scriptural dictate suggests that it is best to avoid performing the full, formal ceremonial blessing for newlyweds during this specific lunar cycle in Ashadh.
”Since the tithi has shifted into the month of Ashadh this year, there was a palpable hesitation among families regarding the rules of the rituals. We have clarified based on textual precedents that while seasoned sons-in-law can receive standard blessings without any hindrance, the ritualistic framework advises keeping it low-key or deferred for those celebrating their inaugural year,” a city-based priest explained.
Festive Markets See High Demand for Ritual Kits
Despite the calendar-induced debate, the festive spirit remains entirely undampened across Agartala’s retail hubs. Following the pandits’ reassurance that the essential rituals of Upanyas (sacred reading) and Sasthi Puja are fully permissible, local vendors have set up extensive temporary stalls across major marketplaces.
Markets are buzzing with specialized Sasthi material kits, including the sacred Sasthi banta (bamboo leaf fans), seasonal fruits, traditional yellow threads, and puja ingredients. Traders reported a major surge in evening footfall and expressed satisfaction with the high volume of sales as mothers-in-law rushed to finish their last-minute shopping for tomorrow’s grand feast.
