AGARTALA | June 29, 2026: Marking the grand invocation of the holy month of Ashadha and signaling the final countdown to the annual Rath Yatra, the auspicious “Snana Yatra Festival” of Lord Jagannath was celebrated today with deep structural devotion and fervor at the historic Jagannath Geo Temple in the capital city of Agartala. On this sacred occasion of Jyeshtha Purnima, thousands of devotees and pilgrims packed the temple complex from early morning to witness the traditional bathing rituals.
According to sacred almanacs, this Snana Yatra is revered as the divine appearance day or birth anniversary of the deities. Driven by the timeless belief that catching a glimpse of the deities on this specific day washes away worldly sins, the temple premises remained packed to capacity throughout the day.
Grand Bathing Ritual with 108 Pitchers of Scented Water and Majestic Elephant Attire
Following the dawn Mangal Arati, amidst Vedic chanting, the sounding of conch shells, and rhythmic Hari Naam sankirtan, the Trinity—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, along with Sudarshan Chakra—were ceremonially brought out of the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) to the specialized Snana Bedi (bathing altar).
To provide cooling relief to the deities from the peak summer heat and as part of the royal purification process, the head priests and servitors performed the grand ritualistic bath using exactly 108 pitchers filled with sanctified water infused with camphor, sandalwood, tulsi, and Ganga jal.
”The Snana Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra is a profoundly sacred chapter of our Sanatan culture. Today marks the annual birth anniversary of Mahaprabhu. Just like every year, a magnificent convergence of faith and emotion has taken over the Agartala Jagannath Bari. Witnessing the exquisite Hati Besha or Gaja Besha (Ganesha attire) donned by the deities after their grand bath is considered highly auspicious. The entire devotee community feels blessed to witness this divine pastime of the Supreme Lord,” a senior representative of the temple committee shared with media personnel on-site.
The 15-Day Seclusion Begins: The ‘Anasara’ Period Underway
Following the conclusion of today’s grand public bathing ceremony, and in strict alignment with the traditions of the main temple in Puri, the process of the deities moving away from public view has commenced in Agartala:
- Anasara or ‘Sickness’ Phase: According to traditional lore and scriptural mandates, the Lord is believed to develop a high fever tonight due to the continuous ritual bath with 108 pitchers of water. Consequently, the main sanctum sanctorum of the temple will remain closed to ordinary visitors for the next 15 days.
- Herbal Treatment by Royal Physicians: During this period of seclusion (Anasara), the idols will undergo delicate rejuvenation and restoration behind closed doors, using special herbal decoctions, sandalwood paste, and secret organic remedies administered by specialized royal physicians.
- Netrotsava and Nabayoubana Darshan: After exactly 15 days of recuperation, just a day prior to the grand chariot festival (Rath Yatra), the Lord will reappear before the public in his fully restored, youthful form, celebrated as Netrotsava and Nabayoubana Darshan.
The local administration and temple authorities deployed strict security measures for today’s mega event. Specialized traffic barricades and volunteer wings were positioned to manage the heavy crowds smoothly, ensuring systematic lines for offering water and viewing the deities. Following the completion of the Snana Yatra, special Mahaprasad was distributed to all present devotees.
