AGARTALA | June 30, 2026: Hoping for a breakthrough regarding their long-pending institutional grievances, a large delegation of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers attended a special session of the Lok Adalat (People’s Court) today. However, the teachers returned empty-handed, stating that the dispute resolution setup failed to deliver any concrete solutions.
Expressing deep resentment outside the court premises, the frustrated educators openly accused the state government of lacking the political will or genuine interest to resolve their operational and financial issues.
High Hopes Lead to Deep Resentment Outside Court Gates
The SSA teachers, who have been demanding pay parity, regularized service books, and standard social security benefits for years, had approached the Lok Adalat assuming the platform would facilitate a fast-tracked compromise with state education department representatives.
Instead, the teachers claimed that the government’s representatives maintained a rigid, non-committal stance during the proceedings, preventing any meaningful dialogue.
”We came to this Special Lok Adalat with a highly positive mindset, hoping the administration would use this legal mediation platform to offer us a fair deal. But today’s proceedings have proven that the state government is simply not interested in solving the problems of SSA teachers. They are completely indifferent to the financial mental distress of thousands of educators who run the grassroots schooling system. If mediation platforms are reduced to mere eyewash, we will have no option but to take our movement back to the streets with intense democratic agitations,” a spokesperson for the SSA Teachers’ Association stated on the field.
Key Demands Stagnating in the Administrative Pipeline
The representative council outlined the core contractual issues that the state administration allegedly refused to address during the mediation session:
- Regularization of Contractual Staff: Formulating a time-bound policy to absorb long-serving SSA teachers into permanent state education cadres.
- Pay Scaling and Allowances: Restructuring the existing basic pay matrix to match the regular state government teacher scales, including Dearness Allowance (DA) revisions.
- Social Security Frameworks: Enforcing immediate access to standard medical leave, maternity benefits, and provident fund security nets for contractual primary and secondary teachers.
