AGARTALA | AUGUST 24, 2026: Raising strong objections against newly introduced traffic restrictions and regulations on auto-rickshaws, e-autos, and e-rickshaws, transport workers affiliated with the All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation and CITU staged a demonstration outside the Transport Commissionerate in Agartala.
Led by organization convener Amal Chakraborty, a delegation met with Joint Transport Commissioner Pradip Sarkar and submitted a formal deputation detailing their core demands.

- Reconsideration of Anti-Worker Policies: Workers gathered in front of the Commissionerate holding red flags and banners, demanding an immediate review of traffic enforcement measures that restrict auto and e-rickshaw operations, threatening the primary livelihood of drivers.
- Consultation Before Policy Implementation: The deputation urged transport authorities to consult worker representatives and safeguard employment options before introducing new traffic rules or operational boundaries across urban pockets.
- Impact on Commuters: Union leaders highlighted that prohibiting commercial e-rickshaws and autos coming from rural or sub-urban routes from entering Agartala city creates significant commuting distress for everyday passengers alongside hitting drivers’ daily earnings.

Addressing media representatives following the meeting, Convener Amal Chakraborty stated that transport officials gave a patient hearing and assured them the issue would be evaluated at higher administrative levels. However, he warned that if worker grievances remain unaddressed, transport unions will be forced to launch a wider, state-level agitation.
