AGARTALA | June 10, 2026: The upcoming Tripura Bar Association election has turned into a high-stakes political battlefield following explosive allegations made by prominent independent candidates Senior Advocate Mrinal Kanti Biswas and Advocate Raghunath Mukherjee.
Addressing a joint press conference, Mrinal Kanti Biswas, who is contesting for the post of Bar Association President, and Raghunath Mukherjee, the candidate for General Secretary, launched a direct attack against both the Pradesh Congress leadership and the ruling panel’s nominees over dirty campaign tactics, illegal suspensions, and fielding controversial candidates.
”My Suspension is Null and Void”: Mrinal Kanti Biswas Slam Congress
The political drama escalated when the Congress party recently issued a statement announcing the suspension of veteran advocate Mrinal Kanti Biswas for contesting independently. Responding fiercely to the move, Biswas—who has enjoyed an uninterrupted winning streak in the Bar elections since 2018—questioned the legal validity of the Congress committee itself.
”The committee that issued my suspension is itself packed with unauthorized and illegal members. An illegal committee has zero authority to take disciplinary action against a loyal member. Furthermore, the Pradesh Congress Committee never officially released an authorized panel list for the Bar elections, nor did any senior leader have the courtesy to speak with me before taking this arbitrary step,” Biswas fired back.
Biswas also slammed his rival, Subrata Debnath, the vice-president of the association and the presidential face of the Ainajibi Unnayan Mancha (Lawyers’ Development Forum). “Subrata Debnath has been in the committee for years and never raised a single finger against any alleged corruption. Fabricating baseless corruption charges now, just days before the election, will not succeed in confusing the highly educated lawyer community,” Biswas added, expressing absolute confidence that his fellow advocates would re-elect him with a thumping majority.
”Government Lawyers Cannot Serve Independent Advocates”: Raghunath Mukherjee
Taking the mic, General Secretary candidate Raghunath Mukherjee targeted his direct rival, Bidyut Sutradhar, who is contesting from the Ainajibi Unnayan Mancha panel. Mukherjee pointed out a fundamental conflict of interest in Sutradhar’s candidacy.
”Bidyut Sutradhar is a government advocate currently holding an official state position. When you are drawing a salary from the government and bound by state responsibilities, it is structurally impossible for you to independently fight for the welfare, rights, and protection of general advocates,” Mukherjee argued.
Poster Scandals and Backing Murder Accused: Serious Allegations Rock the Court Complex
Mukherjee further shocked the media briefing by exposing a clandestine poster war being manufactured inside the sacred court campus. He alleged that anonymous, defamatory posters were being plastered across various courtrooms and bar rooms late at night.
”Supporters of my rival candidate, Bidyut Sutradhar, are actively running around sticking these illegal posters to defame opponents and manipulate the voting atmosphere. This ruins the dignity of the judiciary,” Mukherjee stated.
He also targeted former Bar Secretary Bhaskar Debbarma for maintaining a biased stance during his tenure, alleging that Debbarma failed to take any disciplinary action when a CITU-backed auto driver physically assaulted a practicing advocate within the city.
Dropping the biggest bombshell of the press conference, Mukherjee openly questioned the moral ethics of the opposition panel regarding a high-profile criminal case. “It is deeply shameful that the Ainajibi Unnayan Mancha has formally fielded an individual who stands judicially accused in the horrific murder of late advocate Amit Acharya. The legal fraternity will give a fitting reply to those who shelter elements linked to the killing of our own colleague,” Mukherjee concluded.
The independent duo wrapped up the media briefing by pledging to clean up the bar administration, eliminate political interference from the court premises, and dedicatedly work toward the financial and medical security of young lawyers.
