Tripura BJP Praises PM Modi for Historic Caste-Based Census Move
The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, Rajib Bhattacharjee, expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating a caste-based census to identify and support the weaker sections of society. This move was hailed as “historic” for social justice by the BJP leader.
The Union cabinet approved the proposal for a caste census on April 30, a demand that had been pushed for by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for the past four years. Bhattacharjee, during a press conference, thanked the Prime Minister for taking this step to identify and provide assistance to the marginalized sections of society.
Bhattacharjee criticized the Congress party for failing to conduct the caste census despite previous promises. He highlighted that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced the intention to undertake a caste census in 2010 but was unable to follow through. The BJP leader emphasized that the outcome of the caste census would help in identifying and supporting the weaker sections of society beyond scheduled tribes and castes.
The BJP president reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusive development, citing the introduction of 10 percent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) as an example of their efforts to uplift marginalized communities. He emphasized that the BJP’s focus is on serving the weaker sections of society to achieve a developed India by 2047.
In response to the Congress party’s celebration of the caste census announcement, Bhattacharjee accused them of using it as a political tool. He emphasized that the BJP’s objective is to genuinely support the weaker sections of society rather than engaging in political maneuvers.
Meanwhile, Youth Congress leaders and workers in the state also welcomed the decision to conduct a caste census. They viewed it as a victory for Rahul Gandhi, who had persistently advocated for the census. A senior Youth Congress leader, Nilkamal Saha, praised the BJP for finally accepting the demand for a caste census after initially opposing it. The celebration of the caste census decision by both BJP and Congress leaders reflects the significance of this move towards promoting social justice and inclusivity in Indian society.
