KALACHHARA / DHARMANAGAR: A volatile situation emerged in the Kalachhara Block area of North Tripura today after police forces intercepted a massive, pre-scheduled rally organized by the CPI(M). The peaceful procession, organized to submit a 10-point charter of demands to the Block Development Officer (BDO), was heavily barricaded, turning the commercial hub into a political hotspot.
The opposition CPI(M) leadership strongly condemned the police intervention, labeling it a “completely undemocratic assault on the right to protest.” According to party officials, all legal parameters were strictly followed, and formal administrative permission for the mass deputation had been secured 72 hours prior to the event.
As per the announced schedule, a massive wave of Left workers and local residents marched out from the CPI(M) Kalachhara Regional Office, heading toward the Kalachhara market. The rally aimed to highlight pressing public grievances, lack of rural employment, and local development backlogs. However, as the multi-thousand-strong procession reached the main market zone, a massive contingent of Tripura Police and paramilitary forces blocked the highway with heavy iron barricades.
A heated verbal altercation broke out between the top Left leadership and police officials as protestors tried to push through the cordon. Due to the unyielding administrative blockade, the CPI(M) was forced to cut short the march and hold a highly charged snap demonstration on the street.
The high-profile protest was led by senior political heavyweights, including CPI(M) State Secretariat Member Amitabha Datta, District Secretary Abhijit De, Sub-Divisional Secretary Ratan Roy, former Tripura Minister Bijita Nath, and sitting MLA Sailendra Chandra Nath. Other prominent local faces on the ground included District Committee Member Shashanka Majumder and Kalachhara Regional Secretary Joynal Uddin.
Speaking to Tripura24.in, the senior leadership stated that despite state-sponsored hurdles, the democratic fight against administrative failures in North Tripura will intensify in the coming weeks.
