Virat Kohli, the star cricketer who is often associated with the No. 3 spot in the batting lineup, recently shared a glimpse into his journey to becoming the phenom he is today. In a candid conversation on the ‘RCB Bold Diaries’ podcast, Kohli revealed that despite his success as India’s U-19 captain, he struggled with self-confidence in his batting abilities.
The Indian skipper credited the unwavering support of then-captain MS Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten for helping him overcome his doubts and excel in the crucial No. 3 position. Kohli emphasized the role of determination in his journey, stating, “I was very realistic about my abilities. I did not feel like my game was anywhere close to others. The only thing I had was determination.”
He went on to explain how Dhoni and Kirsten recognized his potential and encouraged him to play freely without any inhibitions. They believed in his never-say-die attitude and backed him to represent the team with his energy and engagement on the field.
Kohli reminisced, “I was never looked at as this outright match winner who can change the game from anywhere. But I had this thing, I’m going to stay in the fight. I’m not going to give up. And that is what they backed.”
This revelation sheds light on the crucial role played by mentors and leaders in shaping Kohli’s career and instilling confidence in his abilities. As Kohli continues to dominate the world of cricket, his journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring cricketers and fans alike.
