Tripura Faces Power Crisis as Tripura’s Electricity Bill Dues Cross Rs. 475 Crore
Agartala, Tripura – May 12, 2025:
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) is facing a severe financial crisis as more than half of its nearly 9.3 lakh power consumers have failed to pay electricity bills for years.
Over 50% Consumers Default
Only 4.32 lakh consumers, mainly from urban centres like Agartala, have paid their dues. This alarming trend has resulted in pending bills worth ₹475 crore, confirmed TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Bose.
“The realisation rate has slightly improved to around 45%, but the rural-tribal areas are still lagging,” said Bose.
Tribal Regions a Major Concern
In tribal belts such as Tulashikar, Hezamara, Mungiakami, and Jatanbari, the situation is dire.
Despite repeated awareness campaigns, non-payment remains rampant in these areas.
TSECL teams are now visiting defaulters and initiating electricity disconnections.
Illegal Hooking & Crackdown
Over 10,000 illegal power connections—commonly known as “hooking”—were disconnected last year.
Authorities collected fines worth ₹3 crore as part of their drive to streamline electricity distribution.
Power Supply Plan for Summer
To tackle summer demands, TSECL will ensure 372 MW of power supply from June through August 2025.
This comes as part of a broader strategy to ensure uninterrupted electricity in urban and rural areas.
