Tripura is bracing for extreme rainfall as the state government has issued a high alert advisory for heavy rainfall and evacuation from May 28 to 31. The authorities are preparing relief operations and closely monitoring the weather to minimize the impact of potential floods.
A fresh advisory has been issued by the Tripura government directing all District Magistrates and emergency departments to remain on high alert as the state is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the specified period. Residents in low-lying areas are being evacuated to safe shelters, and relief operations are being prepared in case they are needed.
According to a Special Weather Bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Tripura. The bulletin also mentioned the possibility of squally and gusty winds during this period. The extreme weather conditions are likely to be caused by a low-pressure area that has developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast.
In response to the advisory, all District Magistrates have been instructed to assess the situation regularly and alert the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Fire and Emergency Services, and trained volunteers. They have also been asked to identify locations that may require a response and be prepared to take immediate action if needed.
Equipment like boats, life jackets, and other flood rescue items are to be kept ready, and river flows, embankments, and catchment areas are to be monitored closely. People in low-lying areas are being evacuated to safe shelters, and relief efforts will begin as necessary. Damage assessments are to be conducted immediately, and response teams and line departments are to take action to remove debris and restore essential services.
Officers and key officials are being deputed for specific responses, and standby trained volunteers are being kept ready for rescue and relief efforts. A need-based response will be implemented immediately according to the disaster management plan, with a close vigil maintained on weather-related information provided by the IMD. The state government is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Tripura during this period of extreme weather conditions.
