Tipra Motha Party legislator Ranjit Debbarma has called for the urgent implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Tripura to protect the state and strengthen national security. In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 24, Debbarma emphasized the need for the enforcement of ILP in Tripura, citing the provisions of the Memorandum of Settlement signed in 1993 between the All Tripura Tribal Force (ATTF) and the government.
The Memorandum of Settlement stated the introduction of the Inner Line Permit system in Tripura would be pursued with the Government of India, with the state government pushing for its approval. Despite this agreement, Debbarma expressed surprise that the ILP system has not been implemented in Tripura, unlike in neighboring states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram.
Debbarma highlighted the security concerns posed by the absence of the ILP system in Tripura, given its 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh. He noted the significant influx of illegal migrants into the state, particularly in light of the ILP’s introduction in Manipur in 2019. The MLA stressed the urgency of introducing the ILP in Tripura to safeguard both the state and the nation.
Drawing attention to the lapse of nearly 32 years since the Memorandum of Settlement was signed, Debbarma underscored the necessity of implementing the ILP system to curb illegal infiltration. He urged the Union Home Minister to take immediate action to introduce the Inner Line Permit in Tripura to protect national security and preserve the integrity of the state.
