The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Tripura is making significant strides towards prioritizing the welfare of indigenous communities in the state, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced.
With 31.76 per cent of Tripura’s population belonging to 19 different tribal communities, the government is focusing on their development and empowerment. Chief Minister Saha revealed that the World Bank has approved a Rs 1,600-crore project dedicated to the advancement of indigenous people in the region. This project, facilitated by the support of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is already in progress in the northeastern state.
Furthermore, the state government has allocated a budget of Rs 860 crore to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) for the fiscal year 2025-26. An additional Rs 179.82 crore will be provided to the tribal council to ensure comprehensive development in tribal areas. Chief Minister Saha noted that the state also allocates Rs 6,000 crore under the tribal sub-plan, emphasizing the integral role of the tribal council in Tripura’s governance.
In efforts to preserve and promote tribal culture and traditions, Chief Minister Saha highlighted that seven eminent tribal personalities from the state have received the prestigious Padma Shri award since 2019. This recognition, unprecedented in Tripura, underscores the government’s commitment to honoring tribal heritage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to tribal welfare was also emphasized by Chief Minister Saha, who highlighted initiatives such as the introduction of Janatiya Gaurav Diwas in honor of Birsa Munda. Additionally, a program titled Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan has been launched to benefit the tribal community, illustrating the government’s continued efforts towards uplifting indigenous populations nationwide.
