A doctor at Tripura’s premier state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital was injured in a violent assault by two attendants of a patient in the early hours of Sunday, sparking widespread concern over the safety of healthcare professionals.
Dr. Litan Das, the victim of the attack, sustained multiple injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital. Fortunately, officials have confirmed that he is now out of danger.
The incident took place at around 3:45 am when Tapan Sarkar and Bapan Sarkar brought their father, Bimal Sarkar, to the emergency department. The patient had reportedly consumed alcohol mixed with poison. While doctors were attending to Bimal Sarkar, the two men suddenly became aggressive and physically attacked Dr. Das and another doctor, Abhiek Deb.
Dr. Shishendu Dhar, head of the emergency department, stated, “They verbally abused the doctors, then pushed them to the ground and beat them up. Despite our staff providing prompt medical care, they were assaulted in the line of duty. It’s deeply disturbing.”
Although private security staff intervened during the altercation, the assailants managed to flee the hospital premises, leaving their father behind. The police have since visited the site and launched raids, but no arrests have been made as of yet.
A formal complaint has been filed with the police, and hospital authorities have stated that a detailed FIR will be lodged by the Medical Superintendent on Monday.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Kanak Chowdhury expressed serious concern over the increasing vulnerability of medical professionals, stating, “We are feeling increasingly insecure. Assaulting doctors who are trying to save lives is simply unacceptable.”
The incident has reignited calls for stronger protection of healthcare workers and stricter enforcement of laws against violence in medical institutions. Healthcare professionals are calling for immediate action to ensure their safety while carrying out their duties.
