Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Saturday that the state government is reviving the Dumboor power plant to generate 11 Mega Watt (MW) of electricity, in response to declining natural gas reserves. The move comes as part of a broader shift towards solar energy in the state.
Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Kailasahar, Unakoti district, Nath emphasized the government’s commitment to preparing for the future while ensuring inclusive development. He explained that the Dumboor power plant used to generate 3 MW, but was damaged by floods last year. Efforts are now underway to restore the plant with a capacity of 11 MW.
Nath highlighted the challenges posed by Tripura’s dwindling natural gas reserves, which have affected power generation at various plants in the state. He stressed the importance of renewable energy sources, stating that power can be generated from gas, air, water, and the sun. The minister emphasized that solar energy is the future and can help reduce electricity bills for households while also allowing them to earn through the installation of solar panels.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched on February 13, 2024, aims to promote the widespread adoption of solar power in Tripura. Nath announced that the state plans to install solar panels in 50,000 households, collectively generating 150 MW of electricity. Tripura currently has approximately 10 lakh electricity consumers.
Nath reiterated the government’s commitment to conducting extensive awareness campaigns across the state to encourage people to embrace solar energy as a sustainable way forward. He emphasized that development must be inclusive and benefit everyone, regardless of political affiliation. The minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to ensuring long-term energy security for the state.
