Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath made a significant announcement on Saturday regarding the revival of the Dumboor power plant in the state. The plant is set to generate 11 Mega Watt (MW) of electricity, marking a shift towards solar energy in response to declining natural gas reserves.
Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Kailasahar, Unakoti district, Nath emphasized the government’s focus on preparing for the future while ensuring inclusive development. He explained that the plant in Dumboor previously generated 3 MW of electricity, but was damaged by floods last year. Efforts are now underway to restore it with a capacity of 11 MW.
Nath highlighted the challenges posed by Tripura’s dependence on natural gas, with reserves dwindling and impacting power generation at various plants in the state. He stressed the importance of renewable energy sources, stating that power can be generated from gas, air, water, and the sun. The minister expressed his belief that solar energy is the future, as it offers a sustainable and environmentally-friendly solution.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched on February 13, 2024, aims to promote the widespread adoption of solar power. Nath revealed that the state plans to install solar panels in 50,000 households, collectively generating 150 MW of electricity. Tripura currently has around 10 lakh electricity consumers.
Nath emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting extensive awareness campaigns across the state to encourage people to embrace solar energy. He reiterated that development must be inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of political affiliation. The minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to ensuring long-term energy security for the state.
