The Tipra Motha Party, a political ally of the BJP in Tripura, is gearing up to stage a major protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on September 9th, urging the Centre to fulfill promises that were made over a year ago.
The party has outlined several key demands that they will be advocating for during the protest. These demands include seeking constitutional recognition for ‘Greater Tipraland,’ the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, and the deportation of illegal immigrants from Tripura. The Tiprasa Accord, which was signed in March 2024 in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, was intended to address the concerns of the state’s indigenous population.
Despite being a part of the BJP-led state government, Tipra Motha leaders feel that there has been little progress made in fulfilling these promises, leaving their community’s aspirations unmet.
Leading the demonstration will be party chief Pradyot Debbarma, who will be joined by state ministers, MLAs, and representatives from the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
A notable participant in the protest will be party leader David Murasingh, who recently completed a grueling 2,500-km march from Agartala to Delhi to raise awareness about the issue of infiltration in the northeastern state.
The protest at Jantar Mantar is expected to draw significant attention to the demands of the Tipra Motha Party and put pressure on the Centre to take action on these long-standing issues affecting the indigenous population of Tripura.
