Tension flared in Tripura’s Dhalai district today as a group of indigenous people staged a protest against opposition leader and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, accusing him of insulting their traditional handwoven attire, the ‘Risha.’
The incident took place at Nailaha Bari on the National Highway in Ambassa, where Chaudhury’s convoy was blocked by about 100 protesters waving black flags and demanding an apology. The indigenous men and women chanted “go back” and held up black flags as they voiced their grievances.
Security forces and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel were deployed in the area to ensure the situation did not escalate. Police intervened to safely escort Chaudhury past the protest site.
Speaking to reporters, one protester expressed, “Jitendra Chaudhury has insulted Risha. He must apologize. Otherwise, we will intensify the movement across the state.”
Chaudhury refuted the allegations, claiming that misinformation was being spread by the BJP’s Janajati Morcha. He emphasized his efforts to promote Risha during his tenure as the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister and stated that he still wears Risha as a symbol of respect for the tribal communities.
Accusing the ruling BJP of orchestrating the protest for political gain, Chaudhury asserted, “The BJP is losing ground, and that is why they staged this drama today. If they are so concerned about democracy, why are they not holding village committee elections?”
The incident sheds light on the deep cultural significance of Risha for the indigenous communities in Tripura and underscores the sensitivity surrounding indigenous cultural symbols in the state. The protest serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and preserving tribal traditions and heritage in the region.
